Saddest truth about car rentals in uganda
- Do not expect to get the standard class of car you’re used to elsewhere.
The problem here is forgetting that these are developing countries, when renting a car you have a lot of expectations on these cars and expect them to be brand new from the ware house as you buy your own cars.
Even if the price is much it doesn’t mean that the car is in good shape or brand new. These used cars are already from japan and then do a self drive in Uganda for about two year I guess you know what to expect now.
- The insurance Policy.
Most of the self drive car rentals are comprehensively insured for the safety of the car owner not you the renter if you take time to read those terms fully. The car is insured comprehensively to fire, theft and head on collision, where do you belong here.
On top of this all in case you get any of the above issues, the car rental company will require you to pay the first 30% of the damages caused as the insurance company’s here pay up to 70% on travel cars because the damage is caused most especially because you know nothing about Uganda safety.
It’s very obviously that you need to check with your travel insurance company before you travel.
- Expect delay or no help on the road.
Yes as I told you this is a developing country and roads are a mess actually in the national parks though the main roads are fairly good. This gives tire punctures an upper hand and the fact that you don’t know where to pass and all those issues.
Here you will be asked to repair the car tires and sometimes buy a new tire if they assume you were driving badly on the road. Anyway how do you get the assistance in the middle of nowhere and they will give you about 24 hours to get to you depending on the distance from the nearest trading center.
The help will come but as I said not as first as you may expect at all.
- Most importantly, READ all you can.
Always keep small change available as you will need it to tip gas attendants (who will fill your car, check your oil, clean your windows, etc) and parking lot attendants who watch your car while you are away. Also, traffic lights are and traffic officers are always on alert and will charge you there and then.
Don’t let this stop you from having a self drive car rental in Uganda
Most car rental companies in Uganda take time to do their best as much as they can. It’s a few bad actors that ruin the reputation of the entire industry. Regardless of all that happens with car rental agencies Uganda is beautiful and all that annoys you will surely be suppressed by the beauty of Uganda.
Exploring the country practically requires renting a car and there are several stunning road trips that you can take, or even a self-drive safari in Queen Elizabeth national park. With amazing memories of the country, you will get the best adventures other than the frustration with a poor car rental experience!
